The Carthage College Community Literacy Center’s mission is to work with families of the Kenosha community to advance education centered on joy through literacy programs and activities. We plan to offer a variety of literacy-related programming opportunities to elementary and middle school students, and to young families.

NEW READERS’ ADVENTURES~Kids ages 5 - 8 are invited to join us for fun activities using leveled readers that provide practice using their new reading skills. We’ll enjoy creative activities and games together based on the books we’ve read. Snacks and take-home handouts included.
WHEN: Thursdays, 4:00 - 5:00pm, from Sept. 18 - Nov. 20 (no session on Oct. 16)
READER-CISE FAMILY NIGHTS~Kids ages 3 - 6 and their caregivers are invited to join us for fun movement and creative activities based on picture books. We’ll read and participate in movement, games, and art activities based on the books. Snacks and take-home handouts included.
WHEN: 7 - 8pm on the following Tuesdays: Sept. 16, Oct. 21, Nov. 18, Dec. 9
YOUNG AUTHORS CLUB~Calling all future authors ages 9 and up! You are invited to join our Young Authors Club, where we participate in creative writing activities and work on publishing our own literature and arts magazine. Snacks included!
ENGLISH LANGUAGE COOKING CLASS~Young adults age 11 and up are invited to practice and apply your English speaking skills by cooking tasty meals with us. Open to all who are interested in developing either their English skills or their cooking skills…or both!
WHEN: 5 - 7pm on the following Mondays: Oct. 27 and Dec. 1
LITERACY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL~Kids in middle or high school who want to make a positive impact on our world, but aren’t sure where to begin, are welcome to join us for meetings where we will read about and discuss important social issues and develop plans of action to make a difference in Kenosha and society at large. Snacks and materials provided.

SCARY STORY CONTEST ACTIVITY~Participate in a carousel of writing activities geared toward getting your ideas down on paper for the KPL Kids @ Uptown Lofts’ Scary Story Contest. All students who attend our event at the literacy center will receive a writing notebook packed with creative writing prompts and methods for getting your thoughts on paper.
WHEN: Saturday, September 27; drop in between 12:00 - 4:00pm
SCARY SHORT STORY SKILLBUILDER~Kids in grades 3 - 5 can join us for a fun writing workshop featuring the legendary scary short stories by Alvin Schwartz. We’ll read a few of these stories and explore the author’s writing skills for use in your own short story that you’d like to write for the KPL Kids @ Uptown Lofts’ Scary Story Contest.
